Marvel Actors Join Campaign to Secure Release of Palestinian Leader Marwan Barghouti
More than 20 actors from the Marvel Cinematic Universe, including Benedict Cumberbatch and Mark Ruffalo, have joined a campaign calling for the release of Marwan Barghouti from an Israeli prison. The 'Freedom for Marwan' campaign, launched by his family and supporters, seeks to urge the United Nations and global governments to advocate for his freedom. Marwan Barghouti, a prominent Palestinian leader and former head of the Al-Aqsa Martyrs' Brigades, has been imprisoned by Israel since 2002. He was convicted of five murders and one attempted murder in 2004, receiving a sentence of five consecutive life terms plus 40 years. While his supporters view him as a symbol of resistance and a de facto leader, critics note that he was convicted for orchestrating several attacks during the Second Intifada. The campaign has gained significant cultural backing, with over 200 figures from the worlds of film, music, and literature joining the signatures. The administration announced that the campaign is a major cultural movement, with many figures like Sting and Richard Branson also endorsing the movement.
