An avalanche in Russia's North Caucasus region killed at least 11 climbers on Mount Mizhirgi.

At least 11 climbers were killed and six others were injured after an avalanche struck a group of 33 people on Mount Mizhirgi in Russia's Kabardino-Balkaria region. The slide occurred at approximately 5 p.m. local time on Sunday, hitting the group at an elevation of about 5,000 meters. Ten climbers managed to navigate down the mountain independently. As of Monday morning, six others remained unaccounted for. More than 50 emergency workers are currently involved in the search and rescue operation. Efforts are being hindered by difficult terrain and the ongoing risk of additional avalanches. Mount Mizhirgi is one of the highest peaks in the North Caucasus, featuring glacial flanks that require technical mountaineering skills.
