Amy Navarrete Arriola, a candidate for the municipal presidency of Matias Romero, was killed during an armed attack in the Paso Guayabo community. The incident occurred during a festival honoring the Virgin of the Nativity, where an armed subject entered the location and opened fire on the attendees. Navarrete Arriola was killed alongside two other people, while three others were wounded in the attack. The incident took place just one day after the State Electoral Institute and the Participatory Citizen Institute of Oaxaca declared the formal start of the 2026-2027 electoral process. Authorities from the General Prosecutor’s Office of the State of Oaxaca initiated investigations to determine the motives and identify the perpetrators. While Navarrete Arriola was a prominent political figure, officials have not yet confirmed if the murder was directly related to her candidacy. No arrests have been made as of the Wednesday morning following the attack.
