Mauricio Salazar reports on the first month of reconstruction efforts following the earthquake in Pereira

The city of Pereira has reached the one-month mark since the earthquake that significantly impacted the region. Mayor Mauricio Salazar reported that the city is transitioning from emergency response to active reconstruction. To date, 170,000 tons of debris have been removed, and a plan has been established to demolish approximately 500 buildings that are structurally at risk. Economic recovery is a primary focus, with the administration providing direct subsidies to both formal and informal merchants. Formal merchants will receive up to $5 million pesos, while informal sellers will receive $1 million pesos. Additionally, a subsidized credit line of up to $40 million pesos is being established to help businesses recover. Infrastructure projects are underway, including the repair of 28 bridges and the intervention of 72 critical slopes. The administration also noted that 48 educational sites with partial damage are beginning repairs, while 13 require total reconstruction. The total reconstruction of the city is estimated to will take approximately five years and require an investment of roughly $10 billion pesos.
