Severe weather and three tornadoes struck southeast Michigan this week, leaving hundreds of thousands of residents without power. The National Weather Service confirmed that the storms produced damaging winds, large hail, and significant rainfall, impacting residential siding, roofs, fencing, and industrial buildings across the region. One EF-0 tornado touched down in Lincoln Park on Thursday afternoon, while a second EF-2 tornado struck Detroit's east side. The EF-2 tornado caused widespread damage, including uprooted trees, snapped power lines, and collapsed buildings. A third tornado, an EF-2 continuation of the Detroit storm, crossed the Detroit River into East Windsor, Ontario, Canada. DTE Energy and Consumers Energy reported that over 250,000 customers were without power on Friday morning. Brian Claka, senior vice president of electric operations at DTE Energy, stated that the utility company aims to restore power to 90% of customers by Saturday night. Claka also advised residents to use generators outdoors to avoid carbon monoxide buildup. Detroit Mayor Mary Sheffield confirmed the tornado damage on the city's east side and urged residents to be cautious near downed wires and damaged structures.
