Erik and Lyle Menendez Granted Earlier Parole Suitability Hearing for March 2027

Erik and Lyle Menendez have been granted a parole suitability hearing tentatively scheduled for March 2027, moving the date up from the original expectation of August 2028. The brothers were originally sentenced in 1996 to life in prison without the possibility of parole for the 1989 shotgun slayings of their parents, Jose and Kitty Menendez. In May 2025, a Los Angeles judge reduced their sentences to 50 years to life, making them eligible for parole. Although the brothers were denied parole in August 2025 due to prison conduct, such as Erik Menendez's use of a cellphone and Lyle Menendez's anti-social traits, the parole board approved the earlier hearing based on new information or changes in circumstances. The brothers have spent over three decades in prison, where they established a hospice program and a beautification project. While prosecutors argued the brothers killed their parents for financial gain, the brothers maintained they acted in self-defense following years of alleged sexual abuse by their father.
