Meta Launches Muse AI Agent to Capture Consumer Market
Meta has launched Muse, a personal AI agent designed to proactively assist users with goals such as booking travel, managing emails, and monitoring subscriptions. The app, which runs on a dedicated virtual machine called Muse Secure VM, allows users to communicate with the agent via the Muse app or WhatsApp. Early data shows Muse reached the No. 2 position on the U.S. App Store's Top Charts, though it trailed behind previous Meta launches like Threads and Meta AI. While the app has gained traction, analysts note that its effectiveness depends on users granting it access to personal data, including inboxes and payment credentials. To address privacy concerns, the administration announced that Muse features a secure VM and an upcoming Confidential VM where data is encrypted with a user-held key. Meta also faces significant legal costs and regulatory scrutiny, which may impact consumer trust. Despite these hurdles, the company is investing heavily in AI infrastructure, with full-year capex guided to $130-145 billion.
