Utah-based Instagram user Kalie Robins shared a viral video demonstrating how Meta AI can assemble a detailed personal profile from years of public social media posts. After cross-posting a video of herself and her daughter to Facebook, Robins discovered the AI suggested a prompt asking, "Who is the child passenger?" When Robins engaged with the prompt, the AI identified both of her daughters, even though she had not publicly shared their names in her own posts. The tool pulled this information from years of content shared by relatives and grandparents across Meta platforms. The AI then provided additional details, such as the daughters' ages, favorite books, and favorite hiking trails. It also attempted to pinpoint Robins' location, drawing on a user-friendly summary of her professional life and employment history. Meta spokesperson Dina El-Kassaby acknowledged that the company "missed the mark" regarding the specific prompts. The administration announced that the issue has been fixed, and El-Kassaby noted that the feature is designed to generate responses based on information the user already has access to. Robins has since asked her family to delete or restrict old photos of her children to improve online privacy.
