Meta Platforms, Inc. agreed to a settlement of up to $18 billion to resolve lawsuits from dozens of US states and the District of Columbia regarding the impact of its social media platforms on children. The settlement addresses charges that the company's products, including Facebook and Instagram, have caused mental health and addiction issues for teens. As part of the agreement, Meta Platforms, Inc. will implement design restrictions for teen accounts, such as limiting usage to two hours per day and providing no access from midnight to 6 a.m. The settlement also requires stronger age verification and linking teen accounts to a parent's account. The company has also faced a separate $567 million penalty in New Mexico, where a judge ordered Meta Platforms, Inc. to pay for treatment services for children harmed by its platforms. While the settlement is significant, market analysts have noted that the cost may be barely material to the company's earnings. Meta Platforms, Inc. continues to invest heavily in AI infrastructure, with capital expenditure jumping 88% annually in the second quarter.
