The report focused on posts El-Sayed deleted from his social media feed, including one from 2020 that compared the COVID-19 death toll to the 9/11 death toll and another from 2021 that contrasted the devastation of the attacks in New York City with the devastation caused by the pandemic in three countries. El-Sayed's campaign stated that he deleted all posts older than July 2023 to prevent them from being taken out of context. He has also faced criticism for his association with Twitch streamer Hasan Piker, who once suggested that America deserved 9/11. El-Sayed defended his stance by stating that he does not believe 9/11 was justified, while acknowledging that appearing with Piker does not mean he agrees with every statement made by the streamer. The report drew criticism from progressive media figures who argued that the headline was potentially anti-Muslim or woke.
