Microsoft confirmed a widespread, multi-hour outage on Monday affecting its Exchange Online service, which powers the Outlook email platform. Users reported significant difficulties with sending and receiving messages, searching for content in mailboxes, and general authentication errors. According to Downdetector, thousands of users reported problems starting as early as 8:17 a.m. PT. Microsoft identified the source of the problem as an issue with an authentication component. The company stated it has developed a remediation strategy and is currently testing it on a portion of the infrastructure to determine its efficacy. Microsoft noted that the authentication component issue is impacting services beyond Exchange Online. The company is currently fine-tuning the remediation strategy as internal tests progress. There is currently no specific timetable for when the service will will be fully restored.
