Barragán Chávez was the leader of the Cartel de Los Reyes, a faction of the United Cartels. The operation involved the Secretariat of National Defense, the National Guard, and the Michoacán Police. Barragán Chávez was a primary target for authorities and was accused of conspiracy to traffic drugs and weapons in a U.S. federal court. He used drug trafficking profits to finance combat operations and acquire armaments such as drones and armored vehicles. The United States offered a reward of up to $3 million for information leading to his arrest or condemnation. The death of Barragán Chávez follows the recent detention of Alfonso Fernández Magallón, another major leader of the Cartel de Los Reyes. Barragán Chávez was known for coordinating extorsions against avocado producers in the region. During the confrontation, a 15-year-old escort, Alberto N., was also killed.
