John Hiner announces MLive Media Group will end printed newspaper editions for eight Michigan titles

MLive Media Group will cease production of printed editions for its eight Michigan newspaper titles, with the final print editions scheduled for delivery on Sunday, Dec. 6. MLive Community President John Hiner announced the decision, stating that the transition is driven by the overwhelming adoption of digital formats by readers. More than 99% of MLive's audience currently accesses news through digital platforms, including the website, mobile app, and social media. This year, digital and online newspaper subscribers surpassed print subscribers. The company reported that it receives more than 8 million monthly visits to its website, ranking it as Michigan's most-read news outlet. Kelly Adrian Frick, vice president of content for MLive Media Group, stated that the move will not affect the staff of roughly 100 journalists. While there will be one full-time distribution job loss and the end of relationships with contracted distributors, no job reductions are planned for the Ohio facility where the newspapers have been printed since 2020. The eight titles—The Ann Arbor News, The Bay City Times, The Flint Journal, the Grand Rapids Press, Jackson Citizen Patriot, Kalamazoo Gazette, Muskegon Chronicle, and the Saginaw News—will continue to operate in online formats.
