Merck and Moderna Successfully Complete Phase 3 Clinical Trials for Personalized Cancer Vaccine
Merck and Moderna announced that their personalized cancer vaccine, intismeran autogene, successfully met the primary goal of Phase 3 clinical trials. The treatment, which targets specific mutations found in a patient's tumor, helped prevent the return and spread of melanoma in over 1,000 patients whose tumors had been surgically removed. Unlike traditional one-size-fits-all therapies, this mRNA-based vaccine provides a bespoke roadmap for the immune system to attack individual cancer cells. Interim analysis shows the vaccine, when combined with the immunotherapy drug Keytruda, was more effective than Keytruda alone, with previous data indicating a 49 percent reduction in the risk of recurrence or death. The treatment showed minimal side effects, such as fatigue and fever, similar to a flu shot. Researchers believe this success validates mRNA technology as a cancer treatment and suggests broad applicability for other tumor types, including lung, bladder, and kidney cancers. The companies plan to seek FDA approval soon, with the goal of scaling the treatment for a global approach.
