Ricardo Monreal, coordinator of Morena in the Chamber of Deputies, acknowledged that many Mexican governors and cabinet members hold dual nationality, often spending time in the United States while serving their states. This observation was made in response to a reform announced by the Presidency on August 27, which proposes to prohibit candidacies for individuals with dual nationality. Monreal noted that before 1997, Mexicans by birth did not lose their citizenship upon acquiring a foreign nationality. The current reform aims to review the right granted by Article 32 of the Constitution. He highlighted that the issue is a delicate matter, particularly in border zones where many Mexican women give birth to children in the United States, resulting in many young Mexicans with dual nationality. While Monreal did not confirm if Morena will approve the initiative, he stated that the topic is under debate and does not yet have a duty to support the proposal against opponents.
