Ricardo Monreal rejects PAN initiative to impose up to 140 years of prison on officials linked to organized crime

Ricardo Monreal, the coordinator of Morena in the Chamber of Deputies, rejected a proposal from the National Action Party (PAN) to impose prison sentences of up to 140 years on public officials linked to organized crime. Monreal characterized the initiative as draconian, arguing that increasing penalties does not necessarily reduce crime. While he acknowledged the PAN's right to present the initiative, he stated that Morena would not support the plan in its current terms and expressed difficulty in reaching a agreement on the penalty duration. The PAN initiative seeks to reform the Federal Penal Code and the Federal Law against Organized Crime. It proposes penalties of 80 to 140 years of prison and fines of 12,000 to 24,000 days for officials who collude with narco-trafficking. The proposal also classifies these crimes as irrepressible, meaning they can be pursued regardless of the years passed. Elías Lixa Abimerhi, the coordinator of the PAN bloc, defended the public servant sanctions and called for an end to the era of narco-politicians. Lixa Abimerhi argued that the reform is necessary to clean up government structures and prevent officials from regaining their freedom. The PAN proposal also includes the construction of a maximum-security prison inspired by the mega-prison in El Salvador. This prison will feature advanced technology and serve as a home for high-risk offenders.
