Long Beach residents evacuated as powerful waves from Hurricane Marie damage coastal homes and boardwalk

Long Beach homeowners were placed under a mandatory evacuation order after powerful waves from the remnants of Hurricane Marie battered the coastline. The waves ripped planks from the boardwalk between 63rd Place and 68th Place and tore through the seawall in several locations, sending water and debris onto homes. Residents worked to protect their properties by piling up sandbags and nailing boards over doors and windows. Some homes faced structural concerns as the tide pulled sand from underneath the foundations, and concrete between houses was reported to be cracked or damaged. Public works crews used tractors to reinforce the sand berm and conducted emergency repairs along the seawall. Officials lifted the mandatory evacuation order on Wednesday after completing inspections. Long Beach Fire Capt. Jack Crabtree stated that no homes were red-tagged, though one property was yellow-tagged. Most residents were allowed to return to their homes as cleanup and recovery efforts continue. The boardwalk remains closed to the public while repairs are conducted.
