Ricardo Monreal clarifies that there is no official proposal to increase taxes on beer and high-sodium foods

Ricardo Monreal, the coordinator of the Morena party in the Chamber of Deputies, clarified that there is currently no formal proposal from the federal executive to increase the Special Tax on Production and Services (IEPS) for beer or products with excess sodium. While various proposals have been mentioned in analysis forums and by specialists, the administration has not yet presented a concrete initiative for these specific tax hikes. Monreal stated that while Mexico needs to strengthen its fiscal income, the government must be careful not to disproportionately affect the wallets of families. He noted that the exclusive faculty to present the Income Law belongs to the president, and lawmakers will review the impact of these measures once the Economic Package is received on September 8th. The Finance Commission indicated that if the taxes on beer and sodium-rich products are updated, they could add 18,500 million pesos to the treasury. This revenue could potentially cover a bimonthly installment of the Social Security Pension for approximately 3 million elderly adults.
