Russia Summons Romanian Diplomat Liliana Burda to Moscow for Meeting on Thursday

Russia's Foreign Ministry announced plans to summon Liliana Burda, Romania's chargé d'affaires in Moscow, for a meeting on Thursday. The Russian ministry did not publicly disclose the specific reasons for the summons at the time of publication. This diplomatic move follows a period of increased tension between the two nations. In late July, Romania declared a Russian diplomat persona non grata after the Romanian military shot down three drones allegedly of Russian origin in three days. Romania had previously expressed firm protest against these drone incursions, labeling the Russian violations of the airspace as unacceptable. In response to these actions, Russia had previously retaliated by declaring Romania's consul general persona non grata and closing its consulate general in St Petersburg. The Russian Foreign Ministry's Information and Press Department Deputy Director Alexey Fadeyev noted that while Russia would not mirror Romania's 'theatrical gesture' of recalling its ambassador, it would respond appropriately to the expulsion of the Russian diplomat.
