MTA construction flagger Moet McCullum killed by D train in Bronx

Moet McCullum, a 41-year-old construction flagger with 11 months of experience, was killed by a southbound D train on Thursday night. The incident occurred near the 161 Street-Yankee Stadium station in the Bronx, where McCullum was preparing to set up flagging lights on the tracks. According to MTA officials, the D train operator reported not seeing any warning lights and proceeded at normal speed. An internal report indicated that McCullum froze as the train approached. The National Transportation Safety Board has dispatched a go team to investigate the accident. This death marks the second time a flagger with less than a year of experience has been killed by a D train since 2023. In that year, Hilarion Joseph was also killed by a D train while working as a construction flagger with less than a year of experience. Following the 2023 fatality, the Federal Transit Administration issued directives to improve MTA safety protocols. The MTA appealed these findings, stating the assessment mischaracterized the agency's safety record.
