Iván Cancino González requests urgent security review after woman dies during prison visit

Justice Minister Iván Cancino González has requested an immediate review of security protocols following the violent death of a woman visiting an inmate at Bogota's La Modelo prison. The incident occurred on Saturday, August 22, at approximately 12:30 p.m. in cell block 13, where the woman was found without vital signs. The inmate she was visiting reportedly confessed to the crime and was immediately isolated by authorities. The administration announced that prisons are not territories without law, emphasizing that violence against women will not be tolerated. The Ministry of Justice has tasked the National Penitentiary Institute (INPEC) with providing a detailed report on the security measures during visitation hours, specifically focusing on alert systems and panic buttons. The National Police and the General Prosecutor’s Office are currently conducting investigations to establish the precise circumstances of the death. The government aims to ensure that the State provides a transparent response and maintains safety for both incarcerated individuals and visitors.
