The American Red Cross urges donors to replenish blood supply following summer shortage

To stabilize the supply, the organization is urging eligible donors of all blood types to schedule appointments for September and October. Donors are encouraged to give now to prepare for the upcoming holiday season and potential emergencies. The American Red Cross reports that a person in the U.S. requires blood approximately every two seconds. To maintain a reliable supply, the organization is offering incentives for fall donations, including a Hello Kitty plush mascot clip for those who donate between September 1 and September 20, 2026. Donors who give between September 21 and October 18, 2026, will receive a $15 e-gift card. The organization also highlighted the 85th anniversary of Dr. Charles R. Drew, the first medical director of the Red Cross Blood Program. To commemorate his contributions, a documentary titled Iconic Excellence will be released on the September 18, 2026, YouTube channel.
