New York City Police Shot and Killed Chaun Bottom on the Brooklyn Bridge

New York City police shot and killed Chaun Bottom on Friday morning after he climbed onto the cables of the Brooklyn Bridge. The incident began at approximately 3:28 a.m. when officers from the Emergency Service Unit responded to a man walking on the bridge cables. Officers spent nearly an hour attempting to establish a verbal dialogue with Chaun Bottom, who was holding a knife and claimed to have a bomb. During the interaction, officers issued multiple verbal commands for him to drop the weapon. Because the officers were physically clipped to the bridge for safety, their movement was restricted. Chaun Bottom began to descend the cable toward the officers, and when he came within three feet of the closest member of the user, an officer on the roadbed discharged his weapon once, striking him. Chaun Bottom was transported to Bellevue Hospital, where he was pronounced dead. Police recovered a knife and a flashlight from the scene. The force investigation division is currently conducting an internal investigation into the shooting.
