The US Navy is currently evaluating whether to rename the upcoming aircraft carrier, originally designated as the USS Doris Miller, to honor President Donald Trump. This move would mark the first time a Navy vessel of this class has been named for a sitting president. Doris Miller was a Black enlisted sailor who gained fame for his heroic actions during the 1941 attack on Pearl Harbor, where he manned an anti-aircraft gun with no formal training and helped move his mortally wounded captain to safety. While the Navy announced the name Doris Miller during the first Trump administration, the current administration is now considering the change. The decision has drawn criticism from civil rights leaders and Democratic lawmakers who argue that Miller's name should be preserved. Supporters of the change note that the Navy is also recommending Miller for the Medal of Honor, the nation's highest military decoration. To balance the potential loss of the carrier's name, the Navy plans to rename another warship after Miller and is seeking approval for his upgraded commendation.
