Nepal and China report nearly 800 deaths and thousands missing following catastrophic glacier-triggered floods in the Himalaya mountains
A devastating flash flood, triggered by a 5.2-magnitude landslide and glacier collapse in the Himalaya mountains, has left nearly 800 people dead and thousands missing across the Nepal-Tibet border. The disaster, which occurred on Wednesday, buried villages and towns along the Trishuli and Bhotekoshi river systems, causing extensive damage to roads, bridges, and hydropower projects. Nepal's National Disaster Management Authority reported 781 deaths and 2,498 missing persons, including 85 Americans. The administration announced that the US and Canada provided $3.6 million each in humanitarian aid, while the UK offered $6.8 million. China has also mobilized 2,100 rescue workers and allocated $32.7 million for relief efforts. Rescue operations are currently challenging due to rugged terrain and adverse weather. Teams are working to clear debris from tunnels where hundreds of workers are feared trapped. While some workers have been rescued, others remain unaccounted for as authorities struggle to identify and store the mounting number of bodies.
