Rescuers in Nepal find two survivors 10 days after catastrophic flash floods on the border with China

Nepal and China authorities have confirmed that the death toll from last week's catastrophic flash floods on the border has risen to at least 1,375 people. More than 5,000 people remain missing as search and recovery efforts continue across the devastated region. In a recent rescue operation, the Nepali Army and a team of South Korean rescue workers retrieved Lu Haitao, a Chinese national, alive from a tunnel at the Upper Trishuli-1 Hydropower Project. Lu Haitao was pulled from a point approximately 225 meters inside the tunnel, where he had been trapped for several days. Simultaneously, rescuers in the district of Nuwakot found Chandika Shrestha, a 60-year-old woman, alive on the upper floor of a four-story building. Her family had previously begun ceremonial rites in Kathmandu, believing she was likely dead. The floods have caused extensive damage to infrastructure, including 37 bridges and 63 suspension bridges, and have impacted nearly 33,000 people. The UN is aiming to raise $49.6 million to provide life-saving assistance to the communities affected by the disaster.
