Developer Jim Halferty announced plans for a new 185,000-square-foot Costco Wholesale and surrounding commercial complex on the Shafter-Bakersfield border. The project includes 10 buildings featuring retail, commercial, and restaurant uses. While the development is expected to be a significant addition to the area, nearby residents expressed mixed feelings regarding potential traffic and crime. Tammy York and other neighbors expressed concern that the current intersection is already congested and that a large shopping center could increase local crime. Conversely, Mike York noted the convenience of a nearby gas station would be a benefit. To address these concerns, Jim Halferty stated that the development plan includes widening Calloway Drive to four lanes and upgrading Seventh Standard Road to future six-lane expressway standards. The City of Bakersfield will require all roadway improvements to be completed before the shopping center opens. City Councilman Bob Smith supported the project, noting that the roads are capable of handling the development.
