Rocket Lab CEO Peter Beck confirms successful orbit deployment of first eight satellites for MDA Space contract

Rocket Lab CEO Peter Beck confirmed that the first eight satellite platforms built under a $143 million contract with MDA Space have successfully reached orbit. The 500-kilogram spacecraft, which are customized versions of the company's Lightning platform, are currently performing normally and generating power as they undergo commissioning. These satellites will eventually support Globalstar direct-to-device communications and Internet of Things (IoT) services. This deployment marks the first batch of 17 platforms agreed upon in 2022. The successful mission demonstrates Rocket Lab's vertically integrated manufacturing process, which allows the company to control costs and schedules more effectively than traditional aerospace contractors. The deployment also serves as a proof point for Rocket Lab's growing defense business, including contracts with the U.S. Space Force and the Space Development Agency. The launch occurred from Cape Canaveral Space Force Station on Saturday. Meanwhile, SpaceX is also preparing for a Falcon 9 rocket launch from the same station, scheduled for no earlier than 9:12 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 15, to carry a batch of Globalstar communication satellites.
