New York City Surpasses San Francisco Bay Area as North America's Leading Hub for Tech Talent
New York City has officially surpassed the San Francisco Bay Area as the leading market for tech talent in North America, according to a new report from CBRE. For the first time in 13 years, New York's tech workforce reached 394,300 jobs, edging out San Francisco's 375,730 jobs. This shift is largely attributed to significant job reductions in the Bay Area and the growth of the finance and AI sectors in New York. Colin Yasukochi, executive director of CBRE's Tech Insights Center, noted that while San Francisco remains a leader in AI specifically, New York's diversified job market provides greater resilience. AI roles grew by 45% over the past year, with both cities adding more than 20,000 AI-specific jobs. Unlike the remote-heavy culture of the pandemic, AI development favors an office-centric culture, driving a recovery in commercial real estate. New York's university infrastructure and lower average wages for software engineers compared to San Francisco also contribute to its growing attractiveness for technology companies seeking East Coast headquarters.
