Roger Goodell plans to rework NFL media rights packages to accommodate streaming and modern viewing habits

NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell stated that the league will consider restructuring its media rights packages during the next negotiation cycle to better align with modern television consumption habits and the growing shift toward streaming platforms. Goodell noted that the league is currently evaluating how to repackage existing rights to ensure the best experience for fans and clubs while maintaining the value of the games. While the league is observing a shift toward streaming, Goodell emphasized that 100% of NFL games will remain available on broadcast television to ensure local markets maintain free, over-the-air access. The NFL currently holds an opt-out clause that can be triggered at the end of the 2029-30 season, which provides the league with the flexibility to redo and resell its existing packages. Goodell highlighted that the league is in ongoing discussions with current and potential partners to identify which platforms offer the greatest opportunity to reach a global audience. The league is also monitoring how younger demographics are utilizing different technologies to seek interactive and on-demand experiences.
