Tim Schwarzenberger leads shareholder campaign to demand transparency from Nike regarding political activism and charitable partnerships

Tim Schwarzenberger, a portfolio manager at Inspire Investing, led a shareholder campaign demanding that Nike provide more transparency regarding its charitable partnerships and political activism. The proposal, which was backed by the firm on behalf of client William C. Cunningham, asked Nike to evaluate and report on the benefits, costs, and risks associated with its charitable support. Schwarzenberger argued that Nike's high score on the Human Rights Campaign’s Corporate Equality Index reflects an increasingly left-wing set of corporate requirements. He specifically noted that the company has not publicly disclosed whether its employee health plan covers gender-transition procedures for trans identified minors. Nike's board recommended that shareholders reject the proposal, stating that the company already performs a robust due diligence review for its charitable partnerships. The company noted that creating a new report would consume resources without providing additional value. Schwarzenberger stated that Nike should focus on its core business of manufacturing athletic apparel rather than wading into hot-button political issues. He noted that the company's share price has declined significantly since 2021, and while political decisions are not the only cause, they may be a distraction.
