Mark Carney Announces Retaliatory Trade Measures Against United States Tariffs

Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney announced that Canada will implement a series of retaliatory trade measures in response to the 50% tariffs imposed by President Trump. The administration announced that these moves will be unveiled at a press conference in Ottawa on Tuesday at 11 a.m. ET. Carney stated that the trade talks collapsed because Washington offered "unfair" and "uneconomic" terms at the last minute. While Canada initially planned a "dollar for dollar" response, Carney indicated that retaliation will be more targeted to account for the larger size of the American economy. The new tariffs will focus on sectors such as steel, dairy, appliances, agricultural equipment, pulp and paper, and electronics. To further pressure the United States, Canada may also restrict exports of key resources like energy, electricity, and potash. Ontario Premier Doug Ford has suggested that Canada could cut off electricity exports to the U.S. if the trade war worsens, a move that could increase costs for American consumers and businesses.
