Alejandra RodrĂguez, owner of the Netu 1 farm, is calling for immediate government assistance to combat the ongoing forest fires in the Maracaibo Vereda of Armero, Tolima. The fires have persisted for 10 days, threatening 580 hectares of dry tropical forest, one of Colombia's most vulnerable ecosystems. RodrĂguez stated that the community has attempted to manual mitigation efforts, but the lack of rain and malfunctioning water-moving animals have left the area in a state of emergency. While the fires have ravaged over 30,000 hectares across the Tolima department, local residents report a lack of official support. RodrĂguez emphasized the need for water supplies via helicopters or drones to protect the diverse wildlife, including reptiles, birds, and deer, from the encroating flames. The situation highlights a growing need for a transition toward Integrated Fire Management, moving beyond reactive suppression to long-term landscape planning and fuel management.
