Russia and North Korea Open First Road Bridge Over the Tumen River

Russia and North Korea opened the first road bridge across their shared border on Monday. The 1-kilometer long bridge links the border cities of Rason in North Korea and Khasan in Russia. Russian Prime Minister Mikhail Mishustin and North Korean Premier Pak Thae Song attended the inauguration ceremony via video link. Mishustin stated that the expansion of transport infrastructure will provide a powerful boost to trade, economic, technological, scientific, and cultural cooperation. Pak Thae Song described the completion of the bridge as a significant event that adds a new dynamic to bilateral cooperation. The bridge features two lanes and can accommodate up to 300 vehicles and 2,323 people daily. It was named after the Soviet military officer Yakov Novichenko, who protected North Korean founder Kim Il Sung from an assassination attempt in 1946. The two countries agreed to construct the bridge in 2024, and construction began in 2025. The bridge will initially be used to transport cargo before opening to passenger traffic later this year. This development follows a period of flourishing relations where North Korea has supplied ammunition and troops to support Russia's war against Ukraine.
