Norway honors King Harald V with state funeral and personal sailing tribute

Norway held a state funeral for King Harald V in Oslo, marking the end of his 35-year reign. The late monarch, who died on August 28 at the age of 89, was honored with a 21-gun salute and a solemn procession from the Royal Palace to Oslo Cathedral. Thousands of mourners lined the streets, and foreign dignitaries, including the monarchs of Sweden, Denmark, Spain, the Netherlands, Belgium, Luxembourg, Jordan, and the heir to the British throne, attended the service. King Harald V was remembered as a popular, down-to-earth monarch who was close to the people. Following the funeral, the Royal House shared a personal photograph of the late king as a young man sailing, highlighting his lifelong passion for the sport. He was an accomplished competitive sailor who represented Norway at three Olympic Games and served as the first president of the Norwegian Sailing Federation. His son, King Haakon VIII, succeeded him on the throne. The transition marks a new era for the Norwegian monarchy, with Princess Ingrid Alexandra now serving as the clear heir apparent. Due to Queen Mette-Marit's recovery from a lung transplant, Princess Ingrid Alexandra is expected to take on a more active role in official duties sooner than anticipated.
