Princess Astrid of Norway dies at age 94

Princess Astrid of Norway passed away on Friday, September 11, at the age of 94. The Norwegian royal family announced her death, noting that she fell asleep during the day. Her last public appearance was at the state funeral of her brother, King Harald V, where she served as a major support for the family and the nation. Princess Astrid was the daughter of King Olav V and Crown Princess Märtha. Following her mother's death in 1954, she became Norway's first lady at age 22, a role she held for 14 years until her brother married Queen Sonja. During her life, she was known for her loyalty and commitment to her duties, holding 12 patronages and chairing the Crown Princess Märtha Memorial Foundation. Born in 1930, Princess Astrid spent five years in exile in the United States during World War II. She married Johan Martin Ferner in 1961 and was survived by her five children and numerous grandchildren. She was an avid sports fan and a dedicated advocate for rescue dogs, often accompanied by her dog, Wilma.
