Novo Nordisk NVO announced positive phase III results for its semaglutide treatment in children with obesity.

Novo Nordisk NVO reported positive data from the phase III STEP Young study, which evaluated once-weekly subcutaneous semaglutide in children with obesity aged six to under 12 years. The study demonstrated a greater reduction in body mass index (BMI) at week 68 compared to a placebo group, both of which received lifestyle modifications including a reduced-calorie diet and increased physical activity.

In the treatment group, 40.4% of children were no longer classified as having obesity after 68 weeks, while none in the placebo group reached this milestone. More than 85% of the children in the study had class II or III severe obesity at the start. Two out of five children treated with semaglutide reduced their BMI below the obesity threshold, reaching either a normal-weight or overweight classification. The overall safety and tolerability profile of the semaglutide treatment was consistent with previous pediatric and adult studies. Novo Nordisk NVO plans to present the detailed data from the STEP Young study at the Obesity Society's annual meeting in November.
