Amkor Technology shares experience significant volatility as chip stocks tumble amid rising oil prices and AI demand
Amkor Technology shares experienced significant volatility on Tuesday, falling 11.8% as the broader semiconductor market faced a broad reversal from previous gains. The Philadelphia semiconductor index fell 5% as chip stocks, including Micron Technology and Nvidia, retreated from key levels. This decline was driven by high oil prices and a 30-year U.S. Treasury yield hitting a 19-year high, which increased financing costs for data-center buildouts. Simultaneously, the administration announced that it opposes Apple buying Chinese memory chips, a move intended to keep more of the memory shortage with Micron, Samsung, and SK hynix. While AI demand remains robust, reports from Anthropic showed a jump in second-quarter revenue, suggesting sufficient demand to fund continued spending on GPUs and memory. Despite these market fluctuations, analysts suggest that large price drops in high-quality stocks like Amkor Technology offer opportunities for investors to be more selective in buying high-quality stocks.
