Taiwan Indicts Nine Individuals for Forging Documents to Illegally Export High-End AI Servers to China
Taiwanese prosecutors have indicted nine people, including a senior manager from Nvidia and two employees from Supermicro, for allegedly forging documents to bypass U.S. export controls on high-end AI servers. The suspects were charged with breach of trust and document forgery for a scheme that made it appear as though 130 B300 servers were being used in Taiwan, while 74 of them were actually delivered to Chinese customers. Since 2022, the U.S. has required licenses for exporting semiconductors to China to protect national security. The investigation revealed that the defendants were fully aware of the rigorous internal control procedures maintained by both Nvidia and Supermicro. Despite these controls, the suspects colluded to secure enormous profits, which Taiwan authorities stated damaged the nation's international image. To address similar loopholes, U.S. lawmakers are considering the Remote Access Security Act (RASA), which would extend export controls to include remote cloud-based access to hardware. This move aims to prevent China from exploiting data centers in Southeast Asia to gain access to restricted Nvidia chips.
