Jessica Tisch Calls for Moral Clarity During 9/11 Memorial Events

NYPD Commissioner Jessica Tisch called for moral clarity during the 25th anniversary of the September 11, 2001, terror attacks. While unveiling a new 9/11 Memorial Wall at One Police Plaza, Tisch stated that the distinction between the terrorists who attacked the city and the heroes who ran into the towers to save lives should not be blurred. The wall commemorates 469 new names of NYPD members who died from 9/11-related illnesses. Simultaneously, the Fire Department of New York (FDNY) held a memorial service at Staten Island University Hospital Community Park to honor the 343 firefighters who died on September 11 and those who died from related illnesses in the years following. FDNY Commissioner Lillian Bonsignore addressed the crowd, acknowledging the community's pain. The ceremony included a water salute from a city fireboat and a large American flag held by ladder trucks. Additionally, a ceremony was held at Fort Hamilton to mark the 25th anniversary. Col. Raul Medrano and FDNY Assistant Chief Joseph Duggan Jr. spoke about the shared bond between the U.S. Army and the FDNY. Duggan highlighted the gallantry of firefighters like Lt. Timothy Higgins, who chose to risk everything to rescue his team during the North Tower collapse.
