NYPD Investigates Three Migrants Emerging from Manhattan Sewer Manhole Near Penn Station

The New York Police Department is investigating a viral video showing three people emerging from a manhole near Penn Station on August 18. The individuals, who were wearing overalls and headlamps, were caught on camera climbing out of the sewer system at approximately 4 a.m. on a Tuesday. NYPD detectives believe the individuals are migrants searching for valuables in the underground tunnels. This scavenger culture is common in countries like Venezuela. While no arrests were made in this specific incident, police have identified several other instances of sewer scavengers in Brooklyn and Queens earlier this summer. City officials from the Department of Environmental Protection stated that while the infrastructure remains safe, entering the sewer system is both illegal and extremely dangerous. The network consists of over 7,400 miles of pipes. The DEP warned the public that sewers contain hazards such as noxious gases, unstable surfaces, and flooding risks, advising that the public should not enter the pipes or drains unless necessary.
