NYPD Detectives Investigate Video of Three Migrants Emerging from Manhattan Sewer Manhole

The New York Police Department is investigating a viral video showing three individuals emerging from a manhole near Penn Station on August 18. Detectives believe the individuals, who were caught on camera wearing overalls and headlamps, are migrants searching for valuables within the city's sewer system. While no arrests were made in the specific August 18 incident, police have identified several other scavengers in previous cases across Brooklyn and Queens. City officials noted that while the scavenger culture is common in countries like Venezuela, entering the sewers is both illegal and extremely dangerous due to risks such as noxious gases and unstable surfaces. The Department of Environmental Protection confirmed that the infrastructure remains safe after inspecting the site. The city's sewer network consists of over 7,400 miles of pipes, some dating back to the 1800s. Construction worker Matt McCann observed that the underground trespassers often appear equipped with tools like coal miner caps and waders.
