Jiayi Zheng, a Brooklyn nurse, was killed in a hit-and-run accident after finishing an overnight shift

A 28-year-old nurse, Jiayi Zheng, was killed in a hit-and-run accident in Brooklyn's Sunset Park neighborhood on Saturday morning. Jiayi Zheng was heading home from an overnight shift at NYU Langone Brooklyn when she was struck by a black Cadillac traveling southbound on Third Avenue at the intersection of 55th Street. Police reported that the vehicle struck Jiayi Zheng as she crossed the street, causing her to suffer severe head and body trauma. She was rushed back to the same hospital where she worked, where she was subsequently pronounced dead. The driver of the Cadillac fled the scene and remains at large. The accident has renewed calls for safety improvements along the two-mile stretch of Third Avenue beneath the Brooklyn-Queens Expressway. Advocacy groups noted that this section of the road has seen 11 fatalities involving pedestrians or cyclists since 2014. The Mamdani administration is currently working on a redesign of the corridor to enhance safety and reflect community needs.
