Off-duty Philadelphia Police Officer Alhassane Barry Killed in Southwest Philadelphia Shooting

Alhassane Barry, a 29-year-old off-duty police officer, died from gunshot wounds sustained during a shooting in Southwest Philadelphia early Sunday morning. The incident occurred just before 4 a.m. near 73rd Street and Elmwood Avenue, where Barry and a 35-year-old man were both shot multiple times outside an after-hours lounge. Police Commissioner Kevin Bethel reported that Barry, who served in the 12th District, was taken to Penn Presbyterian Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead around 8 a.m. The second victim remains in critical condition. Surveillance footage shows a scuffle breaking out before the gunshots were fired. Mayor Cherelle Parker expressed her remorse for the loss, noting that the city continues to work toward making Philadelphia a safer environment. The property where the shooting occurred has a history of violations and was previously labeled a nuisance property. Investigators are currently searching for the gunman, who remains at large. Authorities are urging the community to provide any information or video footage to help solve the case.
