A friendly peacock known as Sugar was incapacitated by a mailman on Mohawk Street in East Pasadena on Tuesday, Aug. 18. The bird, which had become a popular local neighbor, was following the mailman in a driveway when the mailman threw an object at it. Security footage shows the mailman hitting the bird, causing it to flail on the ground. Resident Gwendolyn Thornton noted that Sugar was a familiar bird that often visited houses and even attempted to enter homes. After the altercation, the peacock was collected by Pasadena Humane, where it is currently undergoing veterinary evaluation and X-rays. Kevin McManus, the public relations and communications director at Pasadena Humane, expressed optimism regarding the bird's recovery. Both Pasadena Humane and the United States Postal Service are investigating the incident. Kristina Uppal, a strategic communications specialist with the USPS, stated that the Postal Service expects employees to conduct themselves professionally. While some residents enjoy the local peafowl, others view them as a nuisance, and the incident highlights the ongoing management of the bird population in Los Angeles County.
