Matthew Exton Convicted of Attempted Murder After Trying to Execute Ex-Wife in Toledo Restaurant
Matthew Exton, a 43-year-old former attorney, was convicted of attempted murder and two counts of felonious assault after he tried to shoot his ex-wife in a Toledo restaurant. The incident occurred on April 11, 2025, at the Souk restaurant. Exton saw his ex-wife and her family at a neighboring restaurant during its opening night. He entered the restaurant, ordered a drink, and had it sent to her table. After spitting toward her table as he exited, he returned with a Colt Defender handgun. He pointed the gun at his ex-wife's chest and attempted to fire the weapon multiple times. However, the gun's safety was still engaged, so no shots were fired. A waiter tackled Exton before he could make a second attempt. Exton testified that he was frustrated by the divorce proceedings and intended to show his ex-wife he was serious about a court order. He was acquitted of one count of felonious assault. Exton is scheduled to be sentenced on September 21, 2026.
