Sanjay Shah and Kabir Maharjan Rescued from Nepal Hydropower Tunnel After Flash Floods

Rescuers in Nepal have pulled Sanjay Shah and Kabir Maharjan alive from a hydropower tunnel at the Trishuli 3A construction site. The two men were rescued nine days after catastrophic flash floods, triggered by a glacier collapse, devastated the region. Sanjay Shah, a mechanical foreman, and Kabir Maharjan, a mechanical supervisor, were extracted from a depth of 170 metres. Sanjay Shah was in the tunnel's control room during the flood and reported that he spent time chanting mantras to remain calm while communicating with others in the darkness. He was pulled from the site covered in mud and is currently in stable condition. Both men were flown to a hospital in Kathmandu. The rescue operation is ongoing as authorities believe approximately 115 people remain trapped in the main tunnel. Overall, about 900 workers are missing from 12 hydropower projects across the Himalayas. The floods have resulted in a death toll of at least 1,252 people, with thousands more still missing. Relief efforts continue as the government begins to shift focus toward rehabilitation.
