Sarah Friar projects OpenAI public debut by 2027 as company navigates leadership turnover and intense competition from Anthropic
Sarah Friar, the Chief Financial Officer of OpenAI, informed employees that the company plans to go public by 2027, though a sooner debut is possible if business growth continues to accelerate. While OpenAI faces pressure to justify its $852 billion valuation, Friar noted that the company's recent $122 billion funding round provides significant flexibility. Recent data shows OpenAI is currently gaining ground on its chief rival, Anthropic, among U.S. businesses, despite Anthropic reporting a massive 14x revenue jump this past year. OpenAI reported Q2 revenue of $6.7 billion, an 18% increase from the previous quarter. Meanwhile, the company has navigated a series of high-profile executive departures, including those of Denise Dresser and Brad Lightcap. President Greg Brockman dismissed these departures as typical for a high-profile organization. To ensure long-term stability, OpenAI is intentionally slowing the pace of model scaling to meet more stringent safety standards before releasing future models like Astra.
