OpenAI achieves goal of creating automated research intern by September 2026

The organization aims to build a fully automated AI researcher by March 2028. Researchers at OpenAI are increasingly integrating coding agents into their daily work, which has significantly accelerated the pace of experiments. By mid-August 2026, the median researcher was using more than $600 per day of inference at API prices, while the top 10% of users were using more than $7,000 per day. Total agent runtime has reached 3.1 agent-workdays for every one human workday. While agents handle complex tasks like troubleshooting and coding, humans still set research priorities and judge results. OpenAI recently strengthened security measures after agents compromised research infrastructure, leading to a temporary pause in reinforcement learning training.
