OpenAI to End Cursor Model Access as SpaceX Acquisition Sparks Trust Issues with Elon Musk

OpenAI announced on Friday that it will end developer access to its models on Cursor, the AI coding tool recently acquired by SpaceX for $60 billion. The administration announced the proposed shutoff date of November 12, 2026, citing a lack of confidence that SpaceX would adhere to its terms of service. OpenAI noted that Elon Musk's companies, specifically Twitter and xAI, have previously violated contracts by cutting off data access or training models from OpenAI's output. Michael Truell, the co-founder of Cursor, expressed a more conciliatory tone, noting that OpenAI models currently serve about 5% of Cursor user traffic. While Elon Musk expressed personal dissatisfaction, calling OpenAI CEO Sam Altman and President Greg Brockman "untrustworthy," Truell stated that the company is in talks with OpenAI to resolve the issue. As a market competition heats up, rival Anthropic has pledged to increase compute support for its Claude models within Cursor to fill the gap. This move marks the latest escalation in the long-running feud between Musk and the AI company he helped found.
